Over the month of April students engaged in multiple extra-curricular opportunities. We had Science Club, Math Club, Choir, Recess Leadership Club, Running Club and Soccer Club, so far. Students are intentionally and confidently sharing their skills and strengths to include others. In all opportunities to extend learning, students demonstrated commitment to excellence. This was exemplified through our Grade 1 Spring Concert and Division 2 Choir’s attendance at the Calgary Performing Arts Festival. More field trips and community opportunities are planned for the coming weeks. Please be sure to check your child’s classroom communication tools for updates.
In addition to engaging learning opportunities, May and June will bring many upcoming year-end events and celebrations. Please check your child’s classroom communication tools regularly.

School Council and Parent Society
Thank you for your contributions and attendance at a successful Spring Gala. We would also like to thank all of the parents who coordinated this fantastic event.
AGM - May 28, 6:30 PM at QES
Please join us for the final School Council/ Parent Society meeting of the year! Highlights include:
- planning for next year
- discussion and approval of next year's budget
- Spring Gala summary and celebration!
- elections for School Council and Parent Society positions. ALL positions are open for nominees and we would love to have more people join us!
If you are interested in becoming involved with School Council or our Parent Society, please contact qeeschoolcouncil@gmail.com and the council executive can give you info on what it all entails and what the time commitment for the different positions look like. No previous experience is necessary - all members help each other out, and most positions can be shared between 2 people. In fact – council members love to have a couple of people helping in each role to spread out the work and to allow more people to learn the roles for succession. The more the merrier!
Briar Hill, Hillhurst and Queen Elizabeth School Councils are thrilled to host an in-person parent evening with AHS Education Consultant Andrew Baxter. Andrew is the Team Lead for the Mental Health Literacy Project and a parent at Briar Hill School. Join Andrew for an informative and engaging evening where he will clarify the states of mental health, common mental disorders, and what we can all do to boost and support the mental health of our children and ourselves.
The evening will be held at Briar Hill school on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30 PM. This event is free, however as this is an in-person event, please let us know you will be coming so we can plan and set up accordingly. This will be offered in person only and therefore there will not be a virtual link.
QES Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
In June 2023, QES Community made the following commitment:
“In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day, and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan, Queen Elizabeth School acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action, and makes the following commitment to action for the 2023-2024 school year: Through engagement with Indigenous authored and gifted resources and through understanding the role of oral traditions, Kindergarten to Grade Six students will acknowledge Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada. What have we done so far:
- Land-based community excursions.
- Engaging with Maatoomsii-Pookaiks Day
- Analyzing resources and literature
- Appreciating artistic and oral traditions as a rich communication opportunity
- Engaging in CBE opportunities to learn, virtually, from Elders.
- Engaging with Indigenous Community Members to better support self-identified Indigenous learner
- Purchasing Indigenous Authored Resources.
Please share your ideas as we look forward to our TRC commitment renewal in June 2024.
We would like to sincerely thank our school council and community parents for the treats dropped off this week and our anticipated luncheon on Friday for Staff Appreciation Week. We also look forward to even more exciting learning opportunities in the weeks to come!
Sincerely,
Lisa McConnell
