Hello, Wolf Pack Families!
With a non-instructional day on Friday, January 30, our staff looks forward to system-wide professional learning, with the entire CBE invited to learn together.
As January concludes and February arrives, we look ahead to another month of rich learning filled with possibilities.
Each February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and celebrations that honour the legacy and contributions of Black people in Canada and their communities.
In the coming weeks, many families in our community will also be preparing to celebrate Lunar New Year, which begins on February 17. This year marks the transition from the Year of the Snake to the Year of the Horse, a symbol often associated with energy, movement, and fresh beginnings. We look forward to recognizing and learning about this important annual cultural celebration within our school community.
Warm regards,
Travis Robertson
Principal, Queen Elizabeth School
Optional | Valentine’s Day Kind Note Exchange
Most classrooms will offer an optional opportunity to exchange Valentine’s notes near dismissal on Wednesday, February 11, ahead of Valentine’s Day over the weekend.
Participating classes will share a roster of first names either through Google Classroom or during daily agenda time, allowing notes to be prepared at home beforehand.
If students/families choose to participate, teachers ask that participating students provide a note for every student in the class, rather than selecting only a few classmates. We also kindly request that no food items or edible treats be brought for the exchange.
Upcoming School-Wide Initiative | February “Hearts Full of Learning”
In the coming weeks, students will participate in a school-wide “Hearts Full of Learning” activity focused on literacy, learning, and community.
Each student is invited to:
- Fill out a heart template sharing what they love to read, love to learn about, love about our school, and/or love about contributing to our community. These will be displayed on bulletin boards.
And/or:
- Write a short note or letter and place it in the “Hearts Full of Learning” mailbox at the front office using the same prompts.
Students who include their name and grade level in mailbox letters will receive a written response from the school Leadership Team.
Later in February, we will share highlights and themes from these activities in Wolf Pack Weekly. We look forward to celebrating student voice and what makes our school such a wonderful place to learn.
CBE Initiative | Family Literacy Week
January 26 – February 2
Families across Calgary are invited to join the Calgary Board of Education in celebrating Family Literacy Week to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities.
The CBE Literacy and Early Learning Team has prepared a variety of information and activities to help families engage in meaningful learning at home and at school. Reading together and learning at home play an important role in a child’s development.
Ways families can participate include:
- CBE at-home activities and resources: Find ways to make learning fun and impactful.
- Calgary Public Library Family Reading Pick: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, featuring a family reading adventure with a live performance and themed activities.
- Family Literacy Day at-home activities and resources: Engage in other literacy-related activities as a family.
